About
Åsa Cederqvist (b.1975) received her MFA at Konstfack in 2000. Her work has a performative foundation and is expressed through video, sculpture, installation and performative add-ons, so called extensions, as well as in an interface incorporating all these elements.

We are impoverishing the earth, and we don’t feel good about the inconceivable mistakes that are made daily in the zeal of efficiencies and measurability. We are expected to act rationally when we are instinctively driven animals, still communicating through gut feel. With my work I want to reach beyond this efficiency trap. I want to wake up sleeping senses, call it intuition, spirituality or presence, that would connect us beyond the rational and anthropocentric world we now live in. We are nature after all.
Åsa Cederqvist works with film, installation, sculpture and performance, in an interface between fiction - documentation, haptic -conceptual, ambigious - rational. Åsa continues to build works with a specific personal mythology from the interest in therapeutical methods, behavioural science and collaborative processes. Her work moves between documentary field studies, staged live performances, physical interaction, which all aim to push the expectations of formats, aestetical hierarchies and modes of expression.

Through the act of playing, and study of knowledge production, personal growth, behavioral science and the use of expectations and suspense, my on-going practice if set to manifest the importance of physical understanding and a non-rational and multi-layered communication. Inherent lies the investigation of everyday magic, meaning making, spatial drama and co-creative processes.

For the past five years, Åsa’s artistic practice has focused on the conditions and opportunities of the act of playing, and how to engage in uncontrolled situations, new materials and approaches. A result from this is the work Mama Dada Gaga which portrays three generations of women in a multi-disciplinary work, and also the exhibition Some Kind of Metabolism at Katrineholms Konsthall in 2018.

Åsa Cederqvist has a background as a director of commercials and music videos (2004–), as an artistic director in multiple art educational projects as well as senior lecturer in art at Textil, Konstfack (2010–2020). In 2016-17 she received the IASPIS residency at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin. She was one of the participating artists at the MOMENTUM 10 biennale in Norway 2019 and in Borås Art Biennale 2021.

“We are just another material”Interview by Ewan Wedell at www.hundhund.com (2023-05-30)
[---] “I wondered what she explored in her work.
"Human behavior, our instincts, and our herd behaviours. But also how we are just another material."

What do you mean about humans just being another material? I asked.

"Well, I’m often thinking about the fact that our bodies are also just materials, tissues of various kinds. And early without any hierarchy of materials I think of this. How we, when die we will come (back) to make up parts of the earth again, when our bodies organically blend into the particles. Its also a trick of placing humans in another scale/role, become less of a dominant species. A way of letting the anthropocentric view shift to see things from another angle."

Do you feel you have a single conceptual thread that you can trace through your work?

"That would be my interest in circularities and cycles, both in nature and in how our bodies transform over time through what we eat and what we are being exposed to. But also about being vulnerable. We know that we die every second, and also need not to pretend we know more than we know, sort of. I often come back to a praisal of a kind of ughh-language / expression. Where one fools the rational part of the brain and lets another sensibility take over. Which I think might be the greater self really, beyond the rational, molded, model of oneself. I want my works to be experienced as if they were in constant creation. As is life and us, always in a becoming." [---]

“Interview”
by Veronika Muráriková for Current Obsession Magazine

“Tilblivelser”
Siri Mayer on the exhibition Invitert N˚3 Åsa Cederqvist & Hanne Friis for Kunstavisen.no (2020)

“I «Mama Dada Gaga» er hele universet en sydende smeltedigel av skapelse og destruksjon, hvor ingenting har en fast identitet, men alt er underveis, på vei mot noe annet. Cederqvist er ikke opptatt av hva kvinnen er, men av hva hun kan bli. Vi kan kalle det for kvinnelige «tilblivelser», for å låne et begrep fra filosofen Gilles Deleuze.”

“Morskap som høykunst”Anna Tyrdahl for Subjekt on Mama Dada Gaga in Momentum 10 (2019):

“Cederqvist besjunger divan” Sinziana Ravini for Kunstkritikk on Mama Dada Gaga in Momentum 10 (2019)

Flash Art
Andreas Schlaeger review for Flash Art on Momentum 10 (2019):

“.. it is the large video installation Mama-Dada-Gaga (2018) by Swedish artist Åsa Cederqvist that most preoccupies me in this show. The artist, her mother, and her daughter perform each other, constantly switching their roles, in both realist and fantastical settings and with props that include a soft version of Munch’s famous scream. Hilarity ensues, yet her reflections on notions of performance, expectation, vulnerability, and becoming are not only sincere but moving. ”
